The obvious cause is some misconfigured mixer control.

The problem may be that the mixer controls names guessed by the driver
are ... suboptimal.  It is possible to add a table to the driver to
override these names.

Please show the output of "amixer controls --card=X" and "lsusb -v" for
this device.
