have you tried with xine --verbose=3Dlevel increasing level and seeing eventually debug information? I have not understood if passing from oss to alsa implied also alsa version upgrade for you. Perhaps I lose a aprt of the thread, sorry for that. In this case, could it be that the calls from xine to older version of alsa shared libs it was compiled for, are not suitable with the new version of alsa installed? Even if in this case I would expect some sort of error.... For mplayer, if run with -v switch and with "-ao alsa" audio driver specification it tells you wich version of alsa it was compiled for.
