In case anyone is interested:

I solved my problem installing alsa 1.0.10 over FC3 with kernel 2.6.12.
In addition to removing alsa in the kernel prior to installing from
sources, one has to remove the 3 alsa 1.0.6 rpms.  ( you have to force
it with --nodeps ).  Although this sounds obvious, it wasn't necessary
for me with FC2 and earlier kernels.
