Is there anything further I can do? I can't program my way out of a
paper sack and would like somemore hints on something I can do.

Should I try uninstalling the Debian packages and try compiling the
library and utilities from sources from alsa or something like that?

You said I was missing some entries for like mixing devices or
something... Is that a configuration issue or a software one?
