As you said you can use it via OSS, it seems like hotplug loaded the OSS=20 module for USB audio devices (called audio), and after this, loading the AL= SA=20 USB audio module fails. To unload the OSS module, do (as root) "rmmod audio= ;=20 modprobe snd-usb-audio".
