Resolved the sound problem: I'm quite idiot. I pushed up volume controls in alsamixer, that's true. But I didn't turned them on first! I don't know who is more stupid: me, or alsamixer. I thought that it was implicit that if i change a volume control, the output related to that control should be active! However, 2 of the 3 questions exposed remains. Why must I load the modules every time, and how could I avoid that? Why must I turn up and set up alsamixer every time, and how could I avoid that? ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: modules insertion ok, other issues arising Date: Friday 02 July 2004 15:29 From: dp <dad...@ya...> To: als...@li... Finally i resolved my tedious problem with OSS (I'm still asking myself why it comes for default in many distributions and hasn't been kiked out). I asked a modinfo sound, hoping it would have inspired me (also if i've done it a hundred of times...). I seen where the sound module was hiding, I went here (lib/modules/ecc..../kernel/drivers/sound/sound.o), cut sound.o and copied on my desktop. Now I was hiding it to the os, not viceversa. I rebooted. "Error while initializing the sound driver" welcomed me. Perfect. I commanded, not without a little emotive overload, all modprobes necessary: one after another, the modules were successfully inserted!!! Nothing was working, yet. Only alsamixer. I setted "sound system" to alsa in the kde control center; no sound was working. I rebooted (don't ask me why). At startup, again: Informativo - Messaggio di aRts Sound server informational message: Error while initializing the sound driver: device: default can't be opened for playback (No such device) The sound server will continue, using the null output device. Obviously, no sound was working. Alsamixer failed. I modprobed again the modules, and tried again to start alsamixer: after modprobe, it was working. I pushed up all volume controls, but no sound was working. I setted xmms to alsa output, but I couldn't hear anything (also if xmms was apparently working right). In kde control center, the sound demo button didn't output anything. I rebooted for the third time. For the third time, sound server displayed the error message. For the third time, alsamixer failed. For the third time, alsa modules weren't inserted, and I modprobed them again, then turned up alsamixer controls. For the n-th time, I don't know what to do with my alsa, and ask help here. Is there a way to automatically load the modules at startup?? Is there a way to automatically turn on alsamixer's controls at startup?? And, more importand, how can I use alsa, after it has been loaded and turned on?? Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------- |
