[Alsa-user] Noisy / Distorted playback with XMMS

I have three sound cards to work with, and am having issues with 2 out 
of 3: Here is what I am getting:

Slackware 9.1 Linux 2.4.23
alsa 1.0.0rc2
SB Audigy (snd-emu10k1)
Nforce2 (snd-intel8x0)
EZBus (snd-usb-audio)

The problems are with the Nforce2 and EZBus, Audigy seems ok.

xmms 1.2.8 (first slackware package, then compiled from source w/ no change)

When using the libALSA output plugin I get constant snap crackle pop.

When using libOSS output plugin (via snd-pcm-oss emu driver) I get 
occasional loud total distortion for about 3-5 seconds. This can happen 
from 30 second to 1 minute intervals

This is only an issue in XMMS.

mpg123 works fine with all 3 cards using oss and alsa output.

alsaplayer also works fine with all 3

I downgraded to 0.9.8 drivers/libs/utils and have seen better 
performance with the snd-intel8x0 driver, but not the snd-usb-audio driver.
