you are right, snddevices got alsamixer to run.  thanks, and to bob 
lockie also.  Sound is still muted after each reboot though, even after I 
ran alsactl store and got a /etc/asound.state file saved.  Any ideas why 
that is?

thanks, I actually heard sound on a machine I thought i'd never see happen
