Make starts by stating it has no rule to build:
make[1]: Entering directory

These are the first lines, so yes, it does not build anything at all 
before exiting. The sym link named is not the kernel source, but 
alsa-driver-0.9.0rc3 source, subdirectory include/linux/, pointing to 
../../support/isapnp.h. Like I said, I joined this email list too late 
to see the original message in the thread.

The kernel source is fully installed and configured, this has always 
been the case, I never said anything about kernel source not being there.

I thought this was a recent thread, and recent release. Are you saying 
that this compile error and thread were already answered? I certainly 
did not find the answer (nor beginning of this thread, it is probably 
too new) in this archive:

It seems that 0.9RC3 is broken, at least with respect to SMP x86 on 
Redhat 7.3. I'm trying to find out from this current thread what to do 
to verify one way or another.
