The debian packages come with a startup skript "/etc/init.d/alsa" that's normally enough, but you have to configure the file /etc/modutils/alsa rsp. /etc/alsa/modutils/0.9 rsp. /etc/alsa/modutils/1.0 by hand and then run update-modutils.
