It's working now.  I installed Linux v. 2.5.7 and am using the alsa driver modules
from that.  I did have to enable the debugging options for the sound modules
in configuring the kernel -- without that the modules wouldn't load.

However, now I'm getting a heartbeat.  Click - click - click, all the time.  Possibly
it's coming from esd.  Irritating.
