Dear friends, I would like to configure the Terratec Aureon 5.1 USB audio interface. Presently, I only can see anolog input settings in Alsamixer. (Master, Line-In, Microphone, Line-In 1 and 2 switch, etc ...) But mixer and digital input/output are missing. Also, the interface is not recognised by Alsaconf. The Terratec Aureon 5.1 USB is not in the sound card database. How can I add digital input/output, mixer and entry in the sound card database? Can anyone help me or is there a web page on the wiki? Kind regards, Jean-Michel |

You don't need to run Alsaconf for USB-cards normally. They are activated by hotplug/udev or whatever handles USB devices on your machine. I've never used the digital connectors on my Aureon as I don't have any digital gear, but I think they just duplicate what's on the analog channels. > > You don't need to run Alsaconf for USB-cards normally. Will I be able to > mix the sound of both cards OR will I need Jack? What do you meant with mixing both cards? You normally cannot use two cards as one multichannel card, as they will drift out of sync, and you definitely cannot do this with USB cards. You could use netjack, though. > Also, how do I control the output sound? For example phones sound? Most applications have their own volume control. I generally set soundcard levels to the maximum possible without distortions, then do further volume regulation inside the software I'm using. (I hate it when some mp3-playing software tries to mess with my finely tuned mixer settings.) Ciao -- Frank Barknecht _ ______footils.org_ __goto10.org__ |

Thank you for your answers. To more precise, there is no : * headphone level * front level * rear level Please note that it is the new Terratec Oreon 5.1 USB MK-2. Is this a bug or do I miss something in setting-up Alsa? Kind regards, Jean-Michel |

I doubt that ALSA is buggy here, the card just doesn't have more. This is not unusual at all. As I wrote, many cards, especially USB cards, don't have any mixer controls at all. Although I have the first verison of the Aureon, I believe not much has changed with the card besides the look. Here are my mixer controls: $ amixer controls --card 1 numid=13,iface=MIXER,name='PCM Capture Source' numid=10,iface=MIXER,name='PCM Capture Switch' numid=12,iface=MIXER,name='PCM Capture Switch',index=1 numid=11,iface=MIXER,name='PCM Capture Volume' numid=1,iface=MIXER,name='Mic Playback Switch' numid=2,iface=MIXER,name='Mic Playback Volume' numid=7,iface=MIXER,name='Mic Capture Switch' numid=8,iface=MIXER,name='Mic Capture Volume' numid=9,iface=MIXER,name='Auto Gain Control' numid=3,iface=MIXER,name='Speaker Playback Switch' numid=5,iface=MIXER,name='Speaker Playback Switch',index=1 numid=4,iface=MIXER,name='Speaker Playback Volume' numid=6,iface=MIXER,name='Speaker Playback Volume',index=1 Ciao -- Frank Barknecht _ ______footils.org_ __goto10.org__ |

ALSA just exposes the hardware controls and it is up to higher layers to create more controls in software if desired. Which specific mixer controls from the WIndows driver are missing? Also, the choppiness is not necessarily the fault of your SBLive device - it could be a buggy host controller. Try it on another machine or with a different USB controller. Also make sure you have a recent kernel and that CONFIG_USB_BANDWIDTH is disabled in your kernel .config. Lee |

Hello, I own a Terratec Aureon 5.1 USB and I'm unable to get an analogic 5.1 sound= ,=20 just stereo. (In fact, I have tested it with a 5.1 DVD and Mplayer) Have you a way to test it ? Have you a way to test separately each channel= =20 (front left, rear left...) ? Hi!
There is a great way to test channels! In fact, the ALSA wiki should
mention it much more often, because it's not obvious for unexperienced
users.
Setting up ALSA, you should only use speaker-test to test your setup,
like this:
speaker-test -c<X> -D<device> -twav
where <X> is the number of channels of your device and <device> the ALSA
device you're using. "-twav" is optional, it's just nicer to here a
voice than just white noise. If you don't have defined a device (in your
asoundrc file) yet (which you don't need), you have to use a predefined
device, like "default", "surround51", "surround40", "plughw:0,0" and so
on. Get a list of available devices with
aplay -L
If you use my example below, you should use "default" as device. You can
change its name by replacing "pcm.!default" by "pcm.upmix51", so you
would have to use "upmix51" as device with speaker-test.
What you have to do afterwards is make your applications use the device
you successfully tested with speaker-test. If "default" works fine, you
don't have to do anything for most (all?) applications. If you want to
use another device, either create an alias with
pcm.!default { slave.pcm "<your-device>" }
or configure your applications appropiately (How to do this, depends on
the application).
I'm going to improve the articles of the wiki in the next few months, so
if you have any further questions, go ahead and post them. Like this,
I'll know what's not clear yet and do the changes accordingly.
Regards, Ingo
