4.3.0 is not ready for production use yet. Maybe around 4.3.4 or 4.3.5
it will make sense to work on the compatibility layer and make sure old
code works fine - but in general, you will be best off rewriting code to
take advantage of the new 4.3 API.

Anyway, as of right now, just stick with 4.2.x, it is fully maintained
and a 4.2.1 is planned to appear soon AFAIK. (And I don't know about the
audio problems, maybe try it with different audio drivers in
allegro.cfg, likely only the DirectX ones can influence other
applications.)
