/usr/opt/freeware is a softlink to /opt/freeware (This is a requirement
from the 5.1 installp)

I had some problems running rpm after I reinstalled the zlib. So I had to
reinstall the rpm.rte from
the 5.1B CD. Now I'm back to the startup failure of the KDE.

What are the levels of rpm.rte, zlib, and kdebase?
That is, what is the output from:
   lslpp -L | egrep "rpm.rte|zlib|kdebase"

rpm.rte provides a version of zlib, since rpm requires it.  The versions
of zlib in rpm.rte and zlib are consistent.

Also, what is the output from this:
   ls -ld /opt/freeware /usr/opt/freeware
