I just wanted to mention that I used the IMlog source here to create an all HTML version of AIM. I know that sounds a little strange, but its the perfect solution for keeping in contact with your aim buddies when all you have is an internet appliance or the like that doesn't support java or even javascript. IMlog acts as a server that is connected to over a network or the internet that writes all of the incoming messages to a single log file which scrolls in a browser window. Your buddy list window is captured and appears in a frame next to the scrolling incoming text as a .gif file, and you compose ims simple textbox below the picture of your buddy list.
