Bill, I got the info and will start to work on all of this. I use Linux and Windows at home and Mac at work, but I will use Windows for this project. I'll try to build a new webpage within a week, and work on the icons after that. James, Java.net seems to have a lot of standards to conform to. And being part of the J2EE community, there are even more things to comply with. For now you may have noticed I'm using only a simple home page for AgileWiki on java.net. This should be replaced. And here's the starter kit I got: https://enterprise-bootstrapper.dev.java.net/ Any interest in working on this? I can always add content once you've structured the web page(s). Now I've just added your logo to svn, where it can be accessed by a home page. I put it under www/images. And the new page should replace www/index.html. You probably need to install TortoiseSVN if you're running windows to access subversion (svn). http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/ Let me know if you need any help. And you'll find information about AgileWiki's svn directories here: https://agilewiki.dev.java.net/source/browse/agilewiki/ and here: https://agilewiki.dev.java.net/servlets/ProjectSource I've also been thinking about those icons: Ark, Cabinet, Drawer, Folder, Page and Section. An Ark is a container of precious knowledge. A section is like a part of a document. This is the heirarcy used in AgileWiki, where an item can only "contain" items smaller than itself. But being virtual, a Folder or Page can be in more than one place--so long as it is in the same Cabinet. And Cabinets are special, as they can be "shared" between Arks. (Here each AgileWiki server is an Ark.) Now that's WAY TO MUCH information, I know. The icons need to be small, which means they must be simple. They can be included in various tables, both in the Swing client and on web pages dynamicly generated by AwServlet. I'm also thinking it would be very nice to use these icons (with the names of the items) in a tree browser. However I can't say when I'll get to any of this. Right now my priority is adding user registratioon and login capability to AwServlet. Till then, only the Swing client is functional. Bill --------------------------------- Jiyo cricket on Yahoo! I want to welcome James to this list. He is a graphics artist with 12 years of experience, wants to contribute to the open source community and learn Java, though he already has a background in structured C++ and VB. James has already contributed 2 logos for AgileWiki. James, I'm glad you've decided to go with NetBeans. Its a great product that is only getting better. (And I'm an employee of Sun.) Thanks for the logos. The Agile logo is no, I expect, appropriate as the Agile programming movement is well established and distinct from AgileWiki. But I can add the other to the web page easily enough. As for the icons, you're getting way ahead of me.I've got too much on my plate right now. But as I work on other things, I'll investigate how we can add icons to the Swing and HTML clients. Let me get the logo out there first. I've been thinking that you (and Norm) should open an account at www.java.net as this is where AgileWiki development should be centered. Send me your login name and I'll add you to the project. (And I've put some announcements there covering rolonics that are otherwise burried in my Blog.) I should also introduce Norm Kashdan, who is also on this list. A consulting ontologist, Norm is the author of Rolonic theory. And its been my pleasure to be his student these last 6 years. Bill --------------------------------- Jiyo cricket on Yahoo! http://laforge49.blogspot.com/2006/04/whats-point-wheres-payoff.html Norm, check the above link. I've finally put to rest (for myself anyway) the answer as to why I'm working so hard on the AgileWiki. Nothing really new here, I've just cast the answer from a slightly different perspective. Andy, I've gained enough experience with NetBeans and SVN to be comfortable exporting the make files. Indeed, if you are using NetBeans you can simply open a project and everything is all set up for you. This all will be included in the next release as well. Meanwhile, I've moved to the SVN on java.net. If you create an account there, I can add you to the project if you're still interested. It has been a while since I've heard from you. The latest developments are: forms are now being used, the swing client is working and RMI is in place--multiple clients can be served. The next step then is adding an applet client. Unfortunately there still aren't a lot of commands that are working yet, though having forms working will help a lot. Bill --------------------------------- Jiyo cricket on Yahoo! Norm, I almost forgot, you'll need Java5 to run this. try this from a command box: java -version It should say something like this: java version "1.5.0_06" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_06-b05) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_06-b05, mixed mode, sharing) If it doesn't, you need to install java a current version of J2S3 and/or include it in your PATH variable. Norm, after downloading AgileWiki3-alpha15.zip, unzip it of course. The go to the AgileWiki3\dist directory that you just unzipped. The README.txt file should be pretty clear, just run java -jar DirectSwing.jar from a command window in that directory. ...I'm thinking it might be time for you to start playing with this, all be it only a little, mm? Norm, I do so dislike using the Ark with just a text box. Having a Swing interface will be a big help, and it looks like it will be ready soon. Of course, its only my simple display model. Later I can develop a more Rolonic interface model, mm? Now my reason for moving to an RMI interface is simply because I need to have a multi-client test environment early in the development cycle. Fortunately everything is ready for it and it will not take long. So in about 2 weeks I should be back to working on descriptors and commands, which really need work. But the overall framework is in really good shape. I'm so tired of working on infrastructure. I expect it will be a while until I get back to it and do a second UI model and turn this thing into a web server. There is just so much functionality left to implement. :-( Overall I am quite suprised at how quickly the Swing GUI has gone. NetBeans and GroupLayout has helped a lot, as well as past experience in Python. It has all gone very well, and the displays are looking quite nice. Of course, even when I get back to commands I'll still need to add to the GUI--things like editing. I am very much looking forward to your contributions as a tester, but I'll note that there is as yet no way to create dumps or snapshots--yet another area which needs work. so it looks like I'll be in alpha for a while yet. :-( Bill --------------------------------- Jiyo cricket on Yahoo! I've now updated CmdEvaluator to provide a proper execution environment for update commands. This includes establishing single-writer, a transactional environment, and passing DException messages to the user via the default display. Did a bit of reorganizing--all query commands are now in the queries package. And I've also created an update package for update commands. A new class, AgileWiki.ark.Validate, has been set up for validating common data types. I've added only one method todate, userGroup, a static method for validating what could be either a user or group name. My intent (I just ran out of time at lunch) is to implement the restrict command. That way there is at least one command which updates the database. (So far, all such updates have been handled by evaluators, not commands. But I expect that there will be a LOT of simple commands. So its good to have a sample update command.) Bill |

Andy, its been a while. What's happening on your end? Sorry the code base has been so unstable of late. But the best time for refactoring is early in the project--before there's too much code. I realized this morning that abort needs to invalidate the Ark-level caches: pathname and topics. Done. Last night I was thinking about JSec updates and realized that only someone allowed to modify a role should be allowed to modify a JSec on the role. So I need to copy down the restrict classifier when creating a JSec. Feeling a little more rested this morning. Slept with the AC on all night. Bill |

I've found/fixed a number of errors, none of which were from the refactoring. So my confidence is moderately good. There's just so much to be done now. More refactoring/cleanup, more infrastructure, and with login complete so very much functionality that can be added. So what's next? I'm thinking about a text evaluator that would allow for the entry of documents. (Every transaction now can have an associated document.) Then how about a non-performing JSec? The minimal command that just creates a JSec. But you've got to be logged in for it to be applicable. :-) I'm tired from all this. Going to bed tonight at a reasonable hour. Bill |

I reviewed the comparison operations, fixed less than half a dozen lines of code, and it just woiks! So I commited it. I did this over lunch today. Still a few things I want to test a bit more. Also, it occurs to me that we should have a variation on the Direct portal which takes a script file and creates a nice scenario file. Good for regression testing, and lots more! And it should be easy to do. :-) Its a fine day. But the sun is shinning a bit too brightly. Summer is definately here. I'll need to start running the AC soon. Bill |

I'm to the point where it compiles. But it needs debugging before I dare commit. This was a huge change. Bill |

I've finished and committed the change to Timestamps. It does clarify the code, especially when using Timestamp.NOW rather than "" to indicate present time. Next I want to create a Rolon class which wraps a record id and a reference to DArk. I can then move a lot of methods from Ark to Rolon. And having Rolons as objects rather than just strings holding a record id might help a lot, too. Bill |

Spent the day catching the code up to the theory. Pretty much succeeded. JSecs now even have DUs. :-) Norm, it helps that we [I, anyway] have a better idea of what we're doing. It helps to know what would be great to have, so its easy to spot opportunities when working on the code. But mostly it helps to finally, after 5 years, to have an appropriate API and underlying data structures to program to. Andy, I never was very good with ant files. And its been quite a few years. I think all we need is something which recompiles a source tree when any of the sources are newer than the jar for that source tree. And to recompile a source tree when any of the jar files on which it depends are newer than the jar file for that source tree. That's probably simple enough not to require much maintenance. And I expect the source trees to be small enough, and computers these days fast enough that it shouldn't be a problem. As for NetBeans, it looks like it has options for working with a project with an external make file. So hopefully it will not complicate things. So yes, you've sold me on this idea. It should be easy for developers to build the project. Bill |

1. passwords are no longer echoed by the direct portal on entry. 2. a SHA digest is kept rather than the human-friendly password. Security on registration has always been poor. AgileWiki3 is no better or worse. Bill |

Gosh, but it was easy putting thread control in. No way to really test it with the current test environment. But a quick exercise of the current test facility indicates that it's doing no harm. All 3 evaluators were updated to use thread control. Bill |
