First I unzipped the files to the desktop.

I tried to start it by creating this shortcut in the
adsystem-alpha-03a\classes\ directory:

Target: "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\bin\java.exe"
ads.Main

Start in: "C:\Documents and
Settings\Owner\Desktop\adsystem-alpha-03a\classes\"

I moved soundbank.gm from the java directories into
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\adsystem-
alpha-03a\classes\

The program starts, but doesn't seem to function at all.
Is this just the current state of the program or am I
starting it wrong?

This seems like a worthwhile project, and I might
consider helping with it. I'd like to try what you have
started first.

To get the program working i did the following.

Changed the audio preferences to suit my audio card. Then
    Reloaded the program.

Click insert audio file from the file menu, the track
    window will load.

Select each row to insert an audio file into that row!!
click play, which is the 2nd button from the left under the
    tempo bar.

I have got the same problems like you.
What I suggest is to edit the Main program with a Java
Editor compile it (in the directory adsystem-alpha-03a) and
    make it run.
Then to play a Midi file you use "File" "Import""Midi File"
and then click the second button left below the tempo bar.
Many options doesn't work yet but this one a least is ok.
