I have spent a lot of time studying the open source Erp's to choose one. Adempiere is my choice, but the definition and application of UOM(Unit of measurement) and elimination of UPP(units per pack) in nearly all of the Erp's seems strange.

In reality it is more easy and logic to have just one UOM and that is usually the one which is used in inventory and cost control and to have Multiple UNITS PER PACK or Packings. I give you an example:

For the Cigarettes the UOM is One Cigarette and this is the basis of all inventory and cost controls. but there are a variety of UPP's or packages such as Packet of 10 cigarettes, Packet of 10 cigarettes, box of 200 cigarettes, promotion packs of 20 or 30 cigarettes , carton of 10,000 cigarettes,...
All of these packings have their own stock refrence and Barcode but all of them have the same UOM and refer to one stock item.
For the purposes of inventory and cost control, instead of converting the UOM's, one may simply calculate the total quantities for reference item based on UPP's of these items.
Application of this method will greatly facilitate the reception, stock handling, sales and innevtory and cost controls.
This concept can be used for all kind of UOM's

    Hi,

I am interested in this issue too but mine should be Multiple UoM or the same as Samozaf's one, UPP?

If a cost of each unit are the same whether it packaged in any form (pack, carton, box, etc), this such product has only one UoM, which AD always keep it in the smallest unit. In this case, it should be each or cigarette but it can be different package while costing is just multiple of each unit.

If the cost of each cigarette, pack, carton or box are different, is it multiple UoM?

example: one cigarette cost 10 cents, 20 cigarette in one pack is $1.5 and 10 packs in one carton is $13. If we use one UoM, how can we control its cost?

If you make a change so that price lists are keyed on Product and UOM you can use uom based prices. There are follow on consequences of this change.
These changes were made in a project described here:
    http://www.adempiere.com/Complex_Distribution_System:_Case_Study
A link to the code is in the wiki page if it helps.
Note that all costing was done using std cost and a product could have only one cost (related to its base uom).
