Hi, I'm new at Linux, and I installed Smoothwall 2.0beta.
Attempting to compile a Conexant AccessRunner driver,
I can't use a rpm because, as simply as, this command
doesn't exist in this distro. I know, Smoothwall is not
Linux, so, I tried to use some "rpm" copying from a Linux
CD to a /bin. The message was: can't find usr/lib rpmrc
to read. Well. here's my stupid brain stopped. I don't
know what to do. So, if I can do something to solve
this, please. tell me. Of course I'll send a message to
    Smoothwall people too.
    Thank you very much.
    Regards.
    Daniel

If you want, you can use IPCop wich is derivated on Smoothwall.
      The driver is already installed.
I advise you to try with V1.4.0a1 wich is the last official alpha release
      http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ipcop/
      http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ipcop/ipcop-1.4.0a1.iso

Hi, As you advised me, I've installed IPCOP 1.4,0 al.
But the modem doesn't work. I've seen it has two leds on front panel.
        Ready: It's on.
        Line: it's off.
When the modem is connected in my other PC(Windows XP) these leds are "on" since it boots. I thought possibly is a hardware conflict. I don't know. I searched in the bios, but every seems to be ok.
When I access IPCOP through my web browser, I see that the "cxacru" driver is not installed.
        Any idea?
        Thanks
        PEPEZ

what is the model of your modem?

You have to go to network dialup and select Conexant usb adsl interface and refresh the windows.
          Next you need to :
          - write your VPI/VCI
          - select RFC2684 PPPoA or (RFC1483 and PPPoE) most of the time
          - login and password if PPPoA or PPPoE
          - select automatic DNS (most of the time)

          and save you settings

You can look at what is going by pressing alt-f12 to see the log in live.

          At start the preliminary
"USB device 2 () is not claimed by any active driver" is normal.

It's just because we don't use hot-plug and the module will be loaded a bit later.

Modem model: Amigo adsl usb, CA80U.
            I filled the fields:
            VPI: 8 /VCI: 32
            - select RFC2684 PPPoA
            - login and password
            - select automatic DNS , and tried too:
            Primary DNS: 200.49.96.16
            Secondary DNS: 200.49.96.17
I've got them from Windows XP connection via
            'nslookup' command.

Tried to connect and appeared what follows:

"ipcop logger: conexant usb adsl: cxload failed"
"ipcop ipcop: ERROR: Conexant USB ADSL: cxload failed"
            "ipcop ipcop: dial failed: 256"

That's all. But I noticed when I connected modem to USB port, the follow error message:
ipcop kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:0e.0-1, assigned address 4
            ipcop kernel: usb_control/bulk_nsg: timeout
ipcop kernel: usb-ohci c: unlink URB timeout
ipcop kernel: usb.c: USB device not accepting new address 4

ipcop kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:0e.0-1, assigned address 5
            ipcop kernel: usb_control/bulk_nsg: timeout
ipcop kernel: usb-ohci c: unlink URB timeout

            Bye

Ok, I'll try it. And, thank you very much. I'll let you know how it works.
      My regards.

That's the same whitout typing errors:

USB device not accepting new address 4

To solve this error, you need to enter on the bios (most of the time with "Del' at startup ) and allow an IRQ for USB
You may have too to set "PnP OS : no"
This is not related to a PnP OS (Linux is PnP too)but a bad name due to Microsoft wich force bios maker to use special bios setting for PnP  with Windows

        • Daniel Ignacio López

          Ok, Here I keep trying.
This pc is 486. Bios doesn't have pnp disable/enable option. I'm searching about this item. In addition, USB isn't supported by bios.
I added a usb  pci card. It has an assigned irq .
I'll write you back to tell you what happened.
          Thank you for your patience.

I am not sure that 486 is the right thing when trying to use ADSL modem (and particulary USB modem).
It's may be limit with ethernet modem but USB need some more power to support data transportation over usb.
So it will stress the machine at the maximum and you may don't have enough power to sustain full flow level.

486 is poor processor for ADSL USB modem. I don't know if it uses ACPI.

PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
PCI: if you experience problems, try using option 'pci=noacpi' or even 'acpi=off'

      lilo: pci=noacpi apci=off

If you go from Windows, unplug modem and plug again.

      Regards,
        Josep
