SideX is a free, open-source code editor that recreates the Visual Studio Code workbench using Tauri instead of Electron. Its Rust backend and native system webview reduce the need for a bundled Chromium browser. The editor retains familiar development tools, including Monaco-based code editing, syntax highlighting, and basic IntelliSense. Users can browse project files, search source code, manage Git repositories, and execute commands through an integrated terminal. SideX also includes an AI coding agent capable of generating edits, executing shell commands, and modifying multiple files. Its extension system connects with Open VSX for installing additional development tools. Currently in early development, the project continues expanding extension hosting and debugging functionality.
