Mages

Mages is a free, open-source Matrix messaging client designed for decentralized communication across desktop and mobile platforms. It combines a Compose Multiplatform interface with a Rust backend built on the Matrix SDK. The application supports chat rooms, direct conversations, and threaded messages. Users can exchange text, images, polls, and live location information. End-to-end encryption protects supported conversations, while Matrix Spaces help organize related rooms. The software includes unread message indicators, basic presence settings, and multiple account support. Experimental voice and video calls are available, with desktop screen sharing under development. Mages primarily targets Android and Linux, with less-tested Windows, macOS, and web builds. It remains experimental and may lack features found in mature Matrix clients.

Features

Decentralized Matrix messaging with room lists, previews, and unread indicators
End-to-end encrypted conversations using the Rust-based Matrix SDK
Threaded messaging with media attachments, polls, and live location sharing
Matrix Spaces organization with basic presence and privacy configuration
