My installation of libpng came with "zlib1.dll" version 1.2.2.1828. I have downloaded version 1.2.3 from www.zlib.org and installed it in %windir%\System32 which is the first directory in my PATH global environment variable. I renamed the version in GnuWin32\bin to "zlib1.dll.bak". Everything is working but I am wondering why libpng did not come with the latest version, or should I download a newer version of the package?

I had installed compface 1.5.2 and netpbm 10.27. I have installed "libpng13.dll" version 1.2.8.1799 so I will install the latest version. Thanks for your timely answer.

The latest version of libpng, 1.2.24 (2 Jan 2008), has version 1.2.3 of zlib1.dll. Which version of libpng did you install.
