High performance ping tool
fping is a program to send ICMP echo probes to network hosts, similar to ping, but much better performing when pinging multiple hosts. fping has a very long history: Roland Schemers did publish a first version of it in 1992 and it has established itself since then as a standard tool for network diagnostics and statistics. There was no official fping release from 2002 until end of 2011. Various patches existed, but were never integrated "upstream". Also, the official maintainer didn't answer... -

This program is similar to ping, but tests connectivity at the link layer (layer 2) instead of the network layer (layer 3). This works like the HP-UX linkloop utility. It was tested between Linux and HP-UX. There is also a "server-side" utility.

fping is a ping(1)-like program which uses the (ICMP) echo request to determine if a host is up. fping is different from ping in that you can specify any number of hosts on the command line, or specify a file containing the lists of hosts to ping.
