FreeImage is a library project for developers who would like to support popular graphics image formats (PNG, JPEG, TIFF, BMP and others). Some highlights are: extremely simple in use, not limited to the local PC (unique FreeImageIO) and Plugin driven!

Pixelitor is a cross-platform raster graphics editor written in Java. It supports layers, layer masks, text layers, drawing, multiple undo, etc. It has more than 80 image filters and color adjustments, some of which are unique.

It can read and write over 200 image file formats, and can support a wide range of image manipulation operations, such as resizing, cropping, and color correction. Whyteboard is a painting whiteboard application for Linux and Windows, that allows the annotation of PDF and PostScript documents, and image files with common drawing tools.

This project is the development of a Selection Tool primarely used in ImageJ and possibly in GIMP. It is based in LiveWire and SNAKES methods and will firstly be used in IVUS (intravascular ultra sound) images.

ImageStone is a powerful C++ class library for image manipulation. Its features include load, save, display, transformation, and nearly 100 special image effects. It can be used cross platform (includes Windows, Linux, Mac), and especially under windows it can be used as a DIB wrapper class.

'Yet Another Paint' is a cross-platform drawing program written in Java.

Agar provides a base GUI framework and a standard set of widgets from which graphical applications can be built which run natively under X11, Windows, MacOS, SDL and others. It takes advantage of texture and GPU acceleration wherever available. Agar can also attach to an existing framebuffer, SDL or OpenGL context and operate as a self-contained window-manager. It includes a standard library of general-purpose widgets, and is also designed to be extended externally. New widgets can be implemented as part of an application or library. Complex user interface elements can be realized often in few lines of code. Agar is also extensible at the low-level. The low-level API is documented such that modular drivers can be written which enable Agar applications to work seamlessly under many platforms graphics systems without any change at the application level.

To make the saved images more useful, open them in GIMP, autocrop them, adjust hue/saturation to get the desired colors, and scale them down to the point that the seams are less visible.

Colorator can also edit normal SCR Spectrum images. It can export to TAP to view in your real ZX Spectrum or emulator.

Gimp User Filter is a plugin for The Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/), originally written by Jens Restemeier back in 1997. This project is about maintaining the plugin, keeping it compatible with current versions of Gimp, and eventually extending its features

JTexSynth is a texture (2D image) synthesis program written in Java. It synthesizes large textures from small sample texture images. Synthesis algorithms can be added as plugins.
