VMPK is a virtual MIDI piano keyboard for Linux, Windows and OSX. Based on Qt and Drumstick the program is a MIDI event generator using the computer's alphanumeric keyboard and the mouse. It may be used also to display received MIDI notes.

Impro-Visor® is a music notation tool for producing monophonic lead sheets, specifically intended to help the improviser. Chord symbols are used to generate backing tracks automatically. Improvisation advice exists in the form of note coloration, database of licks, and automatic lick generation from grammars. Grammars can be learned automatically from transcriptions. Styles can be edited and created by the user. Other features include generation of roadmaps for understanding keys and idiomatic chord progressions, chord voicing keyboard, MIDI and MusicXML export. Psycle is a Music tracker (like FastTracker 2 or Impulse Tracker) combined with plugin modularity. It supports its own plugin API, the VST2 plugin standard, and a tracker style sampler playback.

SoundHelix is a free versatile Java framework for algorithmic random music composition. SoundHelix can generate random songs, play them (for example, on any number of MIDI devices or MIDI-capable software synthesizers) and is highly customizable using XML configuration. SoundHelix also allows writing the generated music as MIDI files. SoundHelix produces music that is actually enjoyable to listen to.

PortMedia was created to develop and share cross-platform, open-source I/O libraries for digital media including MIDI, video, and audio. Only a few things were released under the PortMedia umbrella. libTiMidity is a MIDI to WAVE converter library that uses Gravis Ultrasound-compatible patch files to generate digital audio data from General MIDI files. This library based on the TiMidity decoder from SDL_sound library.

WildMidi is a midi processing library and a midi player using the gus patch set.

TSE3 is a powerful third generation open source MIDI sequencer engine written in C++. It is a 'sequencer engine' because it provides the actual driving force elements of a sequencer but provides no form of fancy interface.

Drumstick is a tool to play music. This is a set of C++ MIDI libraries using Qt5 objects, idioms and style. It contains a C++ wrapper around the ALSA library sequencer interface; ALSA sequencer provides software support for MIDI technology on Linux. A complementary library provides classes for SMF (Standard MIDI files: .MID/.KAR), and Cakewalk (.WRK) file formats processing. A multiplatform realtime MIDI I/O library is also provided.

Give the chord progression and a style and JChordBox generates a song. JChordBox is a library tool that can generate backing tracks from a chord progression and a music style. A music Style is describe using an XML and a MIDI file. You can generate an XML Style file from a MIDI file by adding markers to delimit grooves. An XML Song file describes a chord progression and sets the music style to use. JChordBox comes with several command line tools (GenerateSong, CreateStyleFromMidiFile, SongPlayer …). NEW:The application center is called SongPlayer and is a text based user interface that can play JChordBox song. SongPlayer is a MIDI Player that can loop a song, mute or soloing tracks and displays transport informations. SongPlayer is now the default jar application. NEW:Examples have been added to the distribution package.

This script provides a graphical user interface for accessing the raw text of files created by the free version of Mario Paint Composer. It makes it easier to upload and download songs, and also allows songs to be exported in standard midi format.

ABC is a text-based music notation language. This project aims to promote the ABC music notation language by providing cross-platform, open-source tools for manipulating, displaying and playing (via MIDI) ABC files. This project is here for historic reasons and there is not too much activity now. The abcmidi project is updated more frequently.

MIDITOR is a command line compiler that takes ASCII edited music which can be in the style of drum or guitar tablature but with accuracy. MIDITOR is comparable to a sequencer. It turns any ASCII editor into a MIDI editor, for loops, sequencing and composing. Any MIDI message can be sent at specific times including patch changes, control changes.... Tracks and channels can be easily rendered in parallel and the powerful macro preprocessor handles the repetitious nature of music writing. Music is easily scored in any editor chromatically and then output as a MIDI file to quickly check and play the score on FluidSynth or Timidity for instance. Conventional style guitar and drum tab can be used, even conventional style notation using macros, or just one line of chromatic notation.

RasmusDSP is an embeddable Audio/MIDI processor. It contains various filters and generators (including SoundFont 2.0 compatible synthesizer). Has a script interpreter which is used to describe instruments, route Audio/MIDI signal between processor units.
