The goal of the Ibis project at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is to provide an efficient and flexible Java-based programming environment for Grid computing. Ibis provides several communication models, including a highly efficient RMI implementation.

LIXA (LIbre XA) is an open source and free Transaction Manager implementing the distributed transaction processing "XA specification" and "TX (transaction demarcation) specification" according to the X/Open CAE Specification. LIXA implements even XTA: XA Transaction API, an innovative API that implements XA transactional context passing among different applications. LIXA is a Transaction Manager but it's not a Transaction Monitor: this is the distinguishing feature of the project. LIXA technology enables every application container, like a web server or a shell, to become a two phase commit application server. The client/server architecture of LIXA allows many application containers to share a single LIXA (state) server: this is ideal when horizontal scalability is a must and many identical application containers must refer to a single transactional environment. LIXA can be used with the C, C++, Java, Python and COBOL programming languages.

[This project moved to Github and is no longer maintained here] Minimum intrusion Grid (MiG) is an attempt to design a new platform for Grid computing which is driven by a stand-alone approach to Grid, rather than integration with existing systems. The goal of the MiG project is to provide Grid infrastructure where the requirements on users and resources alike is as small as possible (minimum intrusion). MiG strives for minimum intrusion but will seek to provide a feature rich and dependable Grid solution. In line with the minimum intrusion concept, you only need to download and install the middleware if you want to run your own Grid. Users and resources only need a certificate and a browser to use MiG.

mpiGraph is designed to inspect the health and scalability of a high-performance interconnect while under heavy load. This is useful to detect hardware and software problems in a system, such as slow nodes, links, switches, or routing contention.

AsyncWcfLib is a lightweight message bus bridging Windows and Linux by using the .NET Framework or Mono. It supports callback based asynchrony as well as the new async-await pattern available in .NET 4.5. AsyncWcfLib supports threadsafety through an actor based programming model. Actors are loosly coupled system units interacting by passing messages. Message objects are passed inside a process between actors running on different threads. Also, messages may be passed between actors running on different processes, hosts and operating systems. The library is designed for configuration free, asynchronous messaging. A router application is included. It discovers actors by their name on any linked host, even when host name resolution is not possible because of routing- or operating system limitations.
