Gaps can be configured in your config either globally or per workspace, and can additionally be changed during runtime using commands (e.g., through i3-msg). gRootEvent is a desktop manager for Gnome 2.x. It works good with metacity, others may also work. It works also without a window manager! Exec functions and wheelmouse workspace switching works, but the root menu is not yet implemented.
