    CNI (Container Network Interface), a Cloud Native Computing Foundation project, consists of a specification and libraries for writing plugins to configure network interfaces in Linux and Windows containers, along with a number of supported plugins. CNI concerns itself only with network connectivity of containers and removing allocated resources when the container is deleted. Because of this focus, CNI has a wide range of support and the specification is simple to implement. As well as the specification, the CNI repository contains the Go source code of a library for integrating CNI into applications and an example command-line tool for executing CNI plugins. A separate repository contains reference plugins and a template for making new plugins. The template code makes it straight-forward to create a CNI plugin for an existing container networking project. CNI also makes a good framework for creating a new container networking project from scratch.

    MetalLB is a load-balancer implementation for bare metal Kubernetes clusters, using standard routing protocols. Kubernetes does not offer an implementation of network load balancers (Services of type LoadBalancer) for bare-metal clusters. The implementations of network load balancers that Kubernetes does ship with are all glue code that calls out to various IaaS platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure…). If you’re not running on a supported IaaS platform (GCP, AWS, Azure…), LoadBalancers will remain in the “pending” state indefinitely when created. Bare-metal cluster operators are left with two lesser tools to bring user traffic into their clusters, “NodePort” and “externalIPs” services. Both of these options have significant downsides for production use, which makes bare-metal clusters second-class citizens in the Kubernetes ecosystem. MetalLB aims to redress this imbalance by offering a network load balancer implementation that integrates with standard network equipment.

    CLI and validation tools for Kubelet Container Runtime Interface (CRI). cri-tools aims to provide a series of debugging and validation tools for Kubelet CRI. It's recommended to use the same cri-tools and Kubernetes minor version, because new features added to the Container Runtime Interface (CRI) may not be fully supported if they diverge. cri-tools follows the Kubernetes release cycles with respect to its minor versions (1.x.y). Patch releases (1.x.z) for Kubernetes are not in sync with those from cri-tools, because they are scheduled for each month, whereas cri-tools provides them only if necessary. If a Kubernetes release goes End of Life, then the corresponding cri-tools version can be considered in the same way.
