Q&A with Codelathe: The Future of File Sharing

By Community Team

Secure file sharing has long been a priority for businesses, but recent years have seen an evolution in these organizations’ approach to enterprise content management (ECM). A recent Forrester report states that 86% of global software decision-makers have integrated or are planning to integrate software as a service (SaaS) into their ECM. There is also a greater emphasis on cloud file sharing and storage tools, digital meeting tools, and mobile access to content management systems. Many of these changes result from the ongoing shift to remote work that began during the pandemic.

To gain insight into these content management trends and the easiest ways to implement them, SourceForge recently interviewed Venkataragavan Ramasamy, COO of CodeLathe. CodeLathe is a privately held software firm headquartered in Austin, Texas, and the creator of FileCloud, a leading enterprise file sharing, sync, backup, and remote access solution.

Venkat leads business strategy, partnerships, and marketing functions at CodeLathe. He has over 15 years of product management experience at companies like Schlumberger and Garmin and holds an MBA from UT Austin and a Master of Science in Information Systems from Texas Tech University.

What’s FileCloud, and what inspiration led to the product’s creation?

FileCloud is an enterprise file sharing, sync, backup, and remote access solution. It lets you create a private file sharing and sync solution, like a Dropbox that integrates with your own IT infrastructure and storage. With FileCloud, you can save, share, and manage your files on your on-premise servers or in the cloud, and users can securely access those files from anywhere they need to.

We created FileCloud because we wanted to provide a file share and sync solution that gives organizations complete control over their information and the freedom to choose a deployment model that works for them, whether self-hosted, hybrid, or hosted. And it seems to be resonating. So far, we have 3000+ enterprise clients and 100+ stores across 90+ states.

What are a few challenges that organizations can experience with file-sharing?

Some of the most common challenges that businesses face regarding on-premise or cloud file sharing are security and access control. Security is obviously essential to any organization, yet high-profile information breaches are common in the news.

Closely connected to security is access control. Outdated file sharing methods make it almost impossible to know who is obtaining documents and for what purpose. It is practically impossible to limit access to some information, and there is no transparency into who is downloading, uploading, and sharing documents. This results in a loss of data control.

Control over information implies that administrators can specify guidelines for the way information is used. Sharing files using outdated methods offers very little control over information.  When a document is delivered, the sender lacks control over the file, either in terms of how it’s used or who’s using it.  The sender also cannot control how long the receiver will keep the downloaded copy.

What file-sharing options can organizations employ to overcome these challenges?

One way to improve the security and access control of your organization’s file sharing process is to integrate the right tools into your system. Adding the right SaaS solution to a pre-existing setup can save an organization time and money versus a do-it-yourself strategy.

A good enterprise file share and sync (EFSS) solution can provide compliance-level security measures that help with regulations such as HIPAA, ITAR, SOX, and more. It will also simplify access-related issues, making it possible to assign administrative functions and allowing administrators to control who is permitted access to which documents.

Another issue a good EFSS solution will solve is the lack of data control. An ideal file sharing solution will have controls built into the solution that gives administrators the power to handle data utilization. This is done through various capabilities like restricting file access by user, sharing documents through expiring connections, and more.
