ZModeler for Android — Brief overview
ZModeler for Android is a mobile 3D modeling tool created by FSS Apps. The free application targets Android devices and provides a range of modeling and editing utilities for common 3D file types. Though the interface is feature-rich and can feel complicated, it was redesigned to accommodate many advanced capabilities. Development is ongoing and currently handled by a single developer who is also a full-time systems engineering student, which limits available development hours.
Core capabilities
- Transform meshes by translating or rotating parts of a model.
- Modify material properties including diffuse color, textures, specular reflection and basic lighting settings.
- Preview and play animations when compatible skin and IFP files are present.
- Rename nodes that represent geometries and animation frames for clearer scene organization.
- Import models from several popular formats.
- Export finished models to selected file types for use in other tools.
Supported formats
- OBJ and DFF are available as export targets, depending on the scene contents.
- DFF, OBJ and 3DS files can be brought into the app for editing and inspection.
Editing, materials and playback
ZModeler lets you tweak materials on a per-geometry basis (for example: color, texture references, reflection intensity and simple lighting parameters for DFF assets). It also supports playback of animations when a compatible skin and an IFP animation file are available, enabling you to check posing and motion directly on the device.
UI, workflow and project status
The user interface was significantly overhauled to make room for many essential features; the result is a more complex graphical environment that exposes advanced functions. Because a single developer is maintaining the project while studying, progress is gradual. As of 25 December 2020, the app supports importing DFF, OBJ and 3DS files, exporting DFF and OBJ, renaming geometry and frame nodes, animation playback with compatible skin/IFP files, material editing for DFF assets, and basic translation/rotation transforms.
