Overview
Workrave is a free program designed to reduce the risk of repetitive strain injuries and eye strain for people who use computers for long periods. It periodically interrupts your work to encourage movement, brief rests, and simple stretches. The app can lock the screen and display its mascot, Miss Workrave, who demonstrates light exercises and prompts you to step away from the computer when needed.
Break scheduling and timing
Workrave provides configurable short and long pauses to help structure your day. The default values can be adjusted in preferences so the software fits your personal routine.
- Long rest options (customizable; commonly set to a longer pause after several short breaks)
- Short pauses (typical default: around 5 minutes for a quick refresh)
You can use these timers to implement time-management systems such as the Pomodoro Technique (for example, 25 minutes of work followed by a 5-minute break), or any other cadence you prefer. Make the most of breaks by leaving your desk, refilling a drink, or following the guided stretches.
How Workrave detects activity
Workrave does more than act as a basic timer. It tracks keyboard and mouse input to determine whether you’ve been actively interacting with the computer. Because the program counts typing and mouse movement as “activity,” passive tasks like reading or attending video conferences might be treated as inactive time. To avoid this, enable Reading mode so timers continue even when you aren’t making keystrokes or mouse movements.
When a break is due, a pop-up appears. You may postpone the break if necessary; skipping will reset the countdown according to your chosen schedule. If you want stricter enforcement, you can disable the skip option in settings so breaks cannot be deferred.
Guided exercises and reminders
If you’re unsure how to spend break time, Workrave includes short exercise routines demonstrated by an avatar. These sessions outline the number of sets and repetitions to perform and are intended to be light, accessible stretches that promote relaxation and reduced tension.
- Demonstrated stretching routines with clear repetition counts
- Short exercise demos to help you stay alert and reduce stiffness
Why use Workrave
With more people working from home, it’s easy to work for long stretches and risk burnout or injury. Workrave helps build a habit of taking regular, restorative pauses so you can be more productive during focused periods. It combines automated reminders, configurable timers, and exercise guidance to support healthier computer use.
Settings and control options
You can fine-tune how intrusive the program is and which features are active via the preferences menu. Options include:
- Disabling the ability to skip breaks for stricter enforcement
- Adjusting the length and frequency of both short and long breaks
- Turning on Reading mode so non-interactive tasks don’t pause the countdown
Recent changes and alternatives
Recent releases include numerous translation updates and other improvements. If you’re exploring other options, there are several free and paid alternatives available that focus on break scheduling, screen time management, or ergonomic reminders.
