Starbound

Starbound is an open-world, cooperative-friendly survival and crafting sandbox where you start as a stranded traveler with a damaged ship and can choose to repair it, settle on a planet, or roam a procedurally generated universe. The game emphasizes emergent, player-driven narrative and freedom of play—explore diverse biomes, visit settlements and ruins, delve into dungeons, gather resources, and design bases from small cabins to sprawling stations using deep crafting and building systems, with active multiplayer for cooperative exploration and combat. Its strengths include a huge variety of worlds, items, and customization options and flexible gameplay that supports both creative and goal-oriented styles; its drawbacks are that interstellar travel can feel repetitive over long sessions and late-game progression may be less structured than some players expect. Overall, it’s a strong pick for players who enjoy open-ended sandbox adventures blending sci-fi and fantasy, whether solo or with friends.

Windward Horizon

Windward Horizon is an open-world seafaring RPG that puts you in command of a customizable vessel, letting you pursue combat, trade, or quests across procedurally generated oceans. Gameplay supports solo or cooperative play and emphasizes player-driven emergent narrative: your deliveries, jobs, and faction choices shape settlement development, political power, and how towns and leaders respond to you, making each campaign feel distinct. Ships have unlockable classes, talent trees, and hireable captains and crew that provide complementary bonuses, rewarding experimentation and long-term planning. The core systems—exploration, economic routes, and tactical ship-to-ship combat—are strong, though a few usability issues (unclear gear comparisons and fiddly inventory management) hold the experience back; addressing those would noticeably improve accessibility and let the emergent world-building shine.

Pirates of New Horizons

Pirates of New Horizons is a high-energy action title set in a swashbuckling world of ocean voyages, treasure hunting, and ship-to-ship combat. It emphasizes fast-paced encounters that test reflexes and tactical planning across distinct stages and varied foes, blending close-quarters fighting with broader naval tactics and rewarding exploration that uncovers hidden caches and pieces of backstory. The trial/demo offers a portion of the campaign and several core mechanics so players can evaluate pacing, controls, and combat through sample enemy types and exploration missions before deciding on the full purchase; players who enjoy cooperative emergent multiplayer, seafaring RPG elements, or open-world naval action may also like Sea of Thieves, Sid Meier’s Pirates!, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, or sandbox titles that enable pirate-style play.

RymdResa

RymdResa is a roguelike space-adventure that blends role-playing mechanics with lyrical storytelling. You pilot a lone ship through a procedurally generated cosmos of minimalist visuals and fragments of poetry; voyages are contemplative, alternating quiet exploration with tense survival challenges. Core systems include ship customization, resource and hazard management, and open-ended exploration of strange systems and abandoned artifacts, with randomized environments that keep each run fresh. The retro-inspired, sparse art and short poetic passages create an introspective mood suited to players who enjoy solitary, emergent gameplay—tinkering with loadouts, savoring slow exploration, and absorbing evocative worldbuilding. For those seeking a different pace, a more traditional party-based RPG with deep narrative choices and tactical combat provides a contrasting experience.

Tachyons

Tachyon is an indie space roguelike that centers on cooperative ship command and tense decision-making through text-based encounters resolved by player choices. Gameplay emphasizes command and resource management—assigning targets and weapons, routing power between systems, and issuing role-specific orders—while permadeath gives each character a single life per campaign and makes leadership choices consequential. Asynchronous cooperative play lets friends contribute at their own pace, with the captain steering major decisions. Procedural generation of the galaxy, encounters, and allies provides high replayability, offering varied enemy types, alien allies that unlock upgrades, and emergent situational dilemmas that reward creative tactics rather than a single correct response. The game blends methodical, submarine-like ship command with roguelike unpredictability, delivering accessible turn-based multiplayer that remains intense because of its permanent consequences. A recommended alternative for cooperative, creative multiplayer is Minecraft, which offers sandbox exploration and emergent challenges.

Sail Forth

Sail Forth is a sailing racer that puts you in command of a fleet of customizable vessels, combining fast-paced racing with open-ended exploration across procedurally generated oceans. Outfit and tune each ship with different rigs and hulls, accept varied quests that test navigation, combat, and seamanship, and switch tactics and loadouts to meet objectives while managing multiple vessels. Explore vast seascapes dotted with secrets, environmental hazards, ruins, and hidden loot while piecing together a mysterious history through discovered clues. Charming, stylized visuals and intuitive sailing mechanics emphasize immersion, varied weather and ocean behavior, and a blend of racing and adventure that’s accessible to casual players yet rewarding for competitive sailors.

Gangs of Space

Gangs of Space is a massively multiplayer, rogue-style shoot ’em up set in a colorful, ever-changing universe. Deep ship customization, procedurally generated missions, and rogue-lite progression make each run unpredictable; tactical combat rewards planning and adaptability over pure reflexes, while randomized encounters, unlockable gear, and branching objectives keep replay value high. The game supports cooperative and competitive play, letting you form fleets, negotiate alliances, or engage in emergent PvP that reshapes local power dynamics, with social systems and mission variety creating memorable moments for both teamwork and solo dominance. Vibrant visuals, clear combat feedback, and brisk pacing keep action readable and varied; if you prefer a slower, community-focused experience, Roots of Pacha offers a contrasting, deliberate pace.

Endless Sky

Endless Sky is an open-ended 2D space trading and combat game where you begin with a modest ship and can work up to powerful flagships and whole fleets while taking on missions, merchant runs, and hostile encounters. Gameplay centers on building and customizing a fleet with varied ship types and equipment, running trade lines, accepting contracts and story objectives, and engaging in tactical ship-to-ship combat that rewards positioning and loadout choices. Progression is driven by money and reputation, unlocking higher-tier vessels and armaments and enabling shifts in playstyle from solitary trader to mercenary, fleet commander, or faction operative. The game is notable for its replayability and freedom, blending procedural and handcrafted content to encourage exploration and emergent playstyles—whether you prefer hauling freight, hunting bounties, or crafting your own narrative. If you want a contrasting, paid experience with more structured progression and management-focused mechanics, consider The Ranchers.

Eve Online

EVE Online is a free-to-play, massively multiplayer space simulation set in a persistent science-fiction galaxy where players pilot starships, explore countless systems, mine and manufacture resources, trade and speculate on markets, and engage in ship-to-ship combat. Its systems emphasize player agency: the economy, politics, and conflicts are driven primarily by the community, enabling sophisticated economic gameplay, large-scale cooperative and competitive alliances, epic fleet battles, and deep social mechanics for diplomacy, espionage, and corporation management. The game receives frequent updates and balance changes to maintain a dynamic environment that appeals to both casual participants and deep strategic players. It’s best suited to people who enjoy long-term strategic planning, complex social systems, and emergent, player-driven stories, while still accommodating newcomers and veterans.

Pulsar: Lost Colony

Pulsar: Lost Colony is a cooperative space-simulation in which a team operates a single advanced starship. Each player assumes a distinct onboard role—Engineer (system maintenance and power management), Weapons Officer (targeting and combat), Scientist (scans and research), Pilot (navigation and maneuvers) and Captain (leadership and mission coordination)—and must communicate closely to survive a procedurally generated galaxy. Gameplay centers on exploring planets and derelicts, scavenging resources, rerouting power between subsystems, engaging in ship-to-ship combat, scanning anomalies, and accepting missions that shape progression. Key features include fully cooperative play that rewards teamwork, a randomized galaxy for replayability, detailed ship-system management, and a mix of exploration, survival, and tactical combat. Similar games to consider include Barotrauma, FTL: Faster Than Light, Stellaris, and Everspace.

Abandon Ship

Abandon Ship places you in the Age of Sail as commander of a vessel, guiding a crew across an open ocean of narrative-driven missions where choices shape short- and long-term outcomes. Gameplay combines open-world exploration, mission objectives, resource and crew management, and progression through equipment and ship upgrades; you command multiple ship classes with distinct roles, outfit them for specific challenges, and explore sea zones that contain unique quests, hazards and unlockable story content. Combat is tactical and rewards positioning, timing and crew synergies, requiring adaptation to changing conditions and exploitation of enemy weaknesses. Encounters range from rival warships, privateers and shore defenses to mythical sea monsters and environmental dangers like ice fields and volcanic activity. The painterly, maritime visual style reinforces the period atmosphere, and the blend of choice-driven narrative with demanding strategy delivers a memorable seafaring experience.

Man O War: Corsair - Warhammer Naval Battles

Man O’ War: Corsair — Warhammer Naval Battles is a role-playing naval game in which you command a notorious sea captain—either an Empire renegade or a Chaos champion—roaming the Great Western Ocean. Explore islands and trade routes, buy and sell goods to fund repairs and upgrades, call at settlements to resupply and recruit, take on missions from local factions, and raid or capture enemy vessels to seize cargo and build reputation. The game blends tactical ship-to-ship engagements with action-oriented boarding sequences where you directly control your captain from a third-person viewpoint, drawing on classic Warhammer naval rules to mix strategy and melee. It’s suited to players who enjoy naval tactics, role-playing progression, and a digital interpretation of tabletop wargaming.
