What Window Tidy Was
Window Tidy was a utility for macOS that helped users keep many open application windows organized and easy to access. It simplified switching between programs by letting you place windows into predefined arrangements, so you could see and work with multiple apps more efficiently.
How it improved window navigation
While Apple’s Mission Control made strides toward showing open windows, Window Tidy took the concept further by giving users direct control over how their workspace was arranged. Instead of relying on an automatic overview, you could position windows exactly where you wanted them.
- Place windows precisely where you need them by dragging and dropping into a layout
- Build layouts that reflect which applications should be most visible or accessible
- Adjust the grid dimensions so each arrangement fits your workflow
- Create as many different layouts as you want for different tasks or projects
Custom workspaces and flexibility
Layouts were fully configurable, letting you design multiple workspace templates for coding, design, research, or meetings. Grids could be resized to change the proportions of each area, and switching between layouts made it easy to focus on the task at hand without manually resizing and moving windows each time.
Retirement and the move to Mosaic
In January 2017, Window Tidy was retired and succeeded by Mosaic, a newer window-management app from the same developer. Although Window Tidy is no longer being developed actively, it continued to receive essential bug fixes and critical updates for a transitional period. Mosaic implements the same general ideas with rewritten code and an updated user experience for current macOS versions.
