App overview and purpose
The Android Wear companion app acts as the central hub for connecting and controlling an Android Wear smartwatch from an Android phone. It pairs the watch with your mobile device and provides a simple interface for managing the watch’s behavior and available features.
Main capabilities
- Pair a new smartwatch with your phone and manage existing device connections.
- Open the Google Play Store to discover and install apps that extend what your watch can do.
- Configure which apps can send notifications to the watch and mute individual apps when needed.
- View and try voice commands supported by the watch so you can use hands-free features.
Managing notifications and settings
Through the app you can fine-tune how notifications are handled — for example, choose whether alerts appear on the watch or only on your phone, and silence specific apps so they don’t interrupt you. The companion also surfaces a number of configuration options that affect how the watch and phone interact.
Extensibility and future changes
While the app currently functions as a centralized control panel for Wear settings, its capabilities can grow. Updates to the app or the platform may add new controls, integrations, and features over time, expanding what you can manage from the phone.
