Step into the Resistance
Fans of the series have reason to be excited: Ubisoft Toronto has announced the latest entry in the franchise, Watch Dogs: Legion. The game transports players to a contentious, near-future vision of London after Brexit and blends stealth, driving, third-person shooting, and sophisticated hacking into its core experience. Your objective is clear — join an underground movement and dismantle an oppressive system through inventive gameplay.
A near-future London reimagined
Rather than focusing on politics, the game explores the social fallout of a fractured Britain. London has become an increasingly controlled metropolis: surveillance is everywhere, private security forces patrol the streets, and organized crime preys on citizens. The city serves as an open-world sandbox where you can take control of vehicles, manipulate CCTV networks, and interfere with people’s devices to advance the cause of resistance.
Key neighborhoods featured in the map include:
- Brixton
- Leicester Square
- Trafalgar Square
- Camden Market
Recruit anyone — everyone is playable
Unlike previous installments, this title removes the single, fixed protagonist. Instead, virtually every NPC you encounter can be recruited and played. From a stiff corporate banker to a grime artist or an elderly pensioner, any character can join your ranks and be used in missions. This system gives the game a vast pool of playable perspectives and emergent narratives.
Structure and specializations
Recruits become members of DedSec, a clandestine hacker collective fighting the regime. Each candidate arrives with a backstory you can leverage during recruitment, and once enlisted you assign them a role within the team.
Role types include:
- Hacking specialist
- Stealth operative
- Combat-focused agent
You may swap between any recruited characters at will; cutscenes and story beats will follow whichever agent you are currently controlling while the others continue their tasks independently.
Gameplay — tactics, missions, and multiplayer
The game emphasizes stealth and gadgets while retaining fast-paced action sequences, including vehicle pursuits reminiscent of other open-world titles. Missions vary in scope and approach, such as:
- Eliminating hostile operatives
- Extracting data from secured locations
- Infiltrating law-enforcement facilities to access servers
A cooperative mode supports up to four players, letting friends coordinate strikes and rescues. Be warned: the title employs permadeath. If a character is killed, they are permanently lost and must be replaced by another recruit. Captures or arrests also force you to switch agents to mount a recovery operation.
Ambition and scope
Watch Dogs: Legion takes a bold step for the franchise by enabling a true “play anyone” design, creating branching story possibilities and unpredictable outcomes based on the personalities and skills of your recruits. Coupled with a detailed, controversial portrayal of post-Brexit London, the game aims to deliver a lifelike — and provocatively different — open-world experience.
