Viber on macOS — Overview

Viber, long popular on smartphones, now has a native desktop client for macOS (as well as Windows). It’s positioned as an alternative to apps like Skype and Messages, bringing messaging and VoIP to the desktop. While it doesn’t mirror every feature of the mobile apps yet, the macOS release is a capable option for users who want cross-device chat and video calling.

Synchronization with mobile devices

One of Viber’s selling points is continuity between phone and desktop. Conversations and contacts are intended to carry over so you can pick up where you left off on your mobile device. In practice most users report good syncing behavior, though some have encountered problems with contacts or message syncing in specific cases.

Voice and video features

Viber for Mac supports one-to-one voice and video calls between Macs with solid audio/video quality. At present you cannot initiate video calls to mobile clients, nor is multi-user video conferencing supported on the desktop client. If you need to reach mobile numbers or run group video meetings, you’ll hit some limitations compared with other services.

Interface, setup, and ease of use

The desktop app sports a clean, intuitive design that will feel familiar to anyone who has used Skype or Messages. New users are prompted to create a Viber account during setup. The layout is straightforward, making it easy to start conversations, call contacts, and manage basic settings.

Stability and overall impression

Overall the macOS client performs well: syncing is generally reliable and Mac-to-Mac video quality is competitive with leading alternatives. That said, there are occasional reports of sync glitches and the inability to call mobile devices can be a drawback for some people. Despite those caveats, Viber is a worthy IM and VoIP option for users seeking an alternative to established desktop apps.
