Tool overview

UnRarX is a small, free utility for macOS that extracts files from RAR archives. It focuses solely on opening and unpacking RAR containers — it does not create RAR archives. The app is light on disk usage and presents a simple, drag-and-drop interface that most users find easy to use.

Why macOS users need an extractor

macOS can open ZIP files natively but cannot unpack RAR archives without third‑party software. RAR is a common compression format on Windows, and many RAR files sent to Mac users require a dedicated unarchiving tool such as UnRarX to access the files inside.

Installing and allowing the app on macOS

Because UnRarX is downloaded from the web, Gatekeeper may block it when you first try to open it. If you see a message saying the app “can’t be opened,” follow these steps:

  • Open System Preferences (or System Settings) from the Dock or Apple menu.
  • Go to Security & Privacy.
  • In the General tab, look for a message about UnRarX being blocked and click “Open Anyway.”
  • Approve any additional prompts to launch the app.

After granting permission the first time, the app will run normally.

How to extract a RAR file (quick steps)

  1. Launch UnRarX.
  2. Locate the .rar archive in Finder.
  3. Drag the archive onto the UnRarX window, or use the Browse button inside the app to select it.
  4. The extraction starts immediately; progress appears in the app window and extracted folders appear on your desktop or chosen output location.
  5. When finished, the status reads “All OK.” You can click “Stop” during extraction if you need to cancel; when idle the same area shows “Extract.”

You can also choose the destination for extracted files from a dropdown (File Directory, Desktop, Other) and adjust advanced options via the Manage settings.

Buttons and utility actions

  • Browse — Open a file dialog to locate the RAR archive within your folders (Documents, Downloads, etc.).
  • Test — Check an archive for corruption; the app will report CRC errors or other integrity problems.
  • Password — Enter a password for encrypted archives so they can be decompressed.

UnRarX also includes basic safeguards and will warn if it detects potentially unsafe or corrupted content.

Additional features and limitations

  • Repairs: The app can attempt to fix damaged archives using Par2 repair files when available.
  • Architecture: Distributed as a Universal Binary, so it runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.
  • Compression: Unlike WinRAR on Windows, UnRarX does not create RAR archives — it only extracts them.
  • UI: Minimalist, straightforward interface focused on fast extraction.

Alternative unarchiving apps

If you want other options, consider:

  • Keka — free, actively maintained, supports many formats.
  • The Unarchiver — free and easy to use for many archive types.
  • BetterZip — offers a trial, more features for power users (paid afterward).
  • WinZip — provides a trial period and broader platform features (commercial).

Keka and The Unarchiver are free choices like UnRarX; BetterZip and WinZip let you evaluate via trial before purchasing.

Current status and updates

Recent releases added an automatic update feature, so the app can update itself when a new version is available. Development releases are not frequent, and users have suggested broader format support in future updates. Despite sporadic updates, UnRarX remains a straightforward option for quickly extracting RAR archives on macOS.
