Quick overview

Trailmakers: Pioneers puts you in the role of an engineer-turned-explorer in a large physics-based sandbox. You start the Pioneers campaign as a member of the Trailmakers, an elite exploration guild tasked with protecting the peaceful frog settlement of Gregory from the invading BOTNAKs. The core appeal is designing custom vehicles from modular blocks and testing them across varied landscapes.

Beginning the campaign

You are given just a handful of starter pieces and asked to craft your first vehicle. Early on you’ll learn how each component influences mass distribution, balance, and aerodynamic behavior. A single design flaw—like oversized wheels attached without counterweight—can send your machine tumbling down a slope. Completing missions unlocks more parts, gradually expanding what you can build.

Basic construction essentials

  • Chassis: the frame that ties everything together and determines basic footprint and durability
  • Engines: provide forward and reverse propulsion and affect fuel and thrust characteristics
  • Wheels: different sizes and types change traction, rolling resistance, and handling

Take time to test and iterate; small adjustments to placement or mass can drastically change how a vehicle handles.

Unlockable equipment and advanced modules

  • Rocket launchers for offensive encounters
  • Submarine hulls for deep-water exploration
  • Armor plating to increase survivability in combat
  • Thrusters to enable aerial maneuvers and fine attitude control

These parts let you tailor designs for land, sea, air, or even low-atmosphere operations.

Environments and design strategies

  • Alien landscapes that demand unconventional engineering and experimental builds
  • Arid deserts where lightweight frames and oversized tires help across dunes
  • Dense forests that favor nimble, compact machines for tight navigation
  • Snowy mountains where extra mass and tracked systems improve grip on ice

Each biome presents unique obstacles—freeze, sand, foliage, or low gravity—so adapt your designs accordingly.

Vehicle concepts and experimentation

  • Flying boats that cross skyward routes to speed deliveries
  • Tracked snow machines for icy plateaus and steep slopes
  • Submersibles built to explore flooded caverns and wreck sites
  • Hovercrafts that skim over marshes and uneven ground

The built-in physics engine ensures movement, impacts, and momentum feel believable, rewarding creative problem solving.

Missions, side activities, and free play

NPC frogs provide guidance toward wrecked research stations, resource caches, and BOTNAK strongholds. In addition to the main storyline, you’ll find side objectives such as timed obstacle runs and tower-defense style encounters that reward rare components. For open-ended play, five sandbox maps let you build without constraints and freely test radical designs.

Multiplayer and replay value

Bring friends to race, brawl, or exchange blueprints—multiplayer amplifies the fun and creativity. Bear in mind that the learning curve can be steep for absolute beginners, and some players may find mission repetition after many playthroughs reduces novelty.

Practical tips

  • Prototype small, then scale up: test core systems before adding weapons or extra payloads.
  • Balance mass around the center of gravity to avoid flips and uncontrolled rolls.
  • Match propulsion and tires to the terrain type for the best performance.
  • Save frequent iterations so you can revert to working designs after an experiment goes wrong.
