Quick overview
TowerFall Ascension is a fast, bow-and-arrow platform brawler built for local multiplayer. Matches are short and intense, rewarding precision, timing, and smart movement. While newcomers can pick up the basics quickly, the systems provide enough nuance to reward practice and higher-level play.
How the combat works
Combat centers on one-on-one and group skirmishes using bows, arrows, and environmental hazards. Players trade shots, use dodges and jumps to survive, and recover arrows from the arena to stay in the fight. The result is a mix of frantic exchanges and careful positioning that favors both reflexes and strategy.
Player modes and appeal
- Supports 1–4 players for solo practice or couch multiplayer.
- Includes cooperative options as well as competitive free-for-all and team-based matches. This makes the game ideal for casual gatherings, competitive local sessions, and players who enjoy improving their mechanical skill over repeated rounds.
Platforms and availability
TowerFall Ascension launched on a small console and later reached more mainstream platforms. It can now be found on:
- Nintendo Switch (with extra content and tweaks)
- Windows via Steam
- PlayStation 4
- macOS
- Ouya (original release platform)
Expanded editions and Switch content
Subsequent releases gathered the original game plus a range of updates and additions. The Nintendo Switch edition in particular bundled the Dark World expansion and introduced platform-specific extras, further broadening the play options and stage variety.
If you want something different
If you prefer a paid, single-player open-world experience instead of local arena combat, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is a popular alternative that offers a very different style of gameplay and a paid release model.
