Free-to-play spin on a heavyweight series
Total War Battles: KINGDOM converts the sprawling, complex Total War formula into a free-to-play mobile strategy. The result is a much simpler experience than the mainline titles, but it manages to retain the gritty, realistic atmosphere that fans associate with the franchise.
Starting out: settlement building and environment
You begin on a hex-grid map, laying out farms, workshops and defenses. One of the first tasks is to build a dam and reroute a river, then make sure flood defenses are in place — a small gameplay beat that immediately signals the game’s attention to practical, medieval problems. An in-game advisor guides you through the opening stages, teaching you how to recruit workers and soldiers, assign tasks, and unlock new structures and resources.
The world map is fairly detailed when zoomed in, making it easy to pick out individual buildings and features. That clarity helps while expanding your settlement and planning upgrades.
Combat: deliberate and formation-based
Battles are resolved in a regimented, formation-based system rather than chaotic real-time skirmishes. You place units into a nine-slot formation, set their positions, and activate abilities — success depends on composition, placement and timing.
There’s a clear rock-paper-scissors relationship between unit types. For example:
- Cavalry excel against Swordsmen.
- Swordsmen have the upper hand over Spearmen.
- Spearmen are effective counter-units for Cavalry.
Units look authentic on the field, but at maximum zoomed-out views you’ll rely on icons to tell them apart. Some tactics are subtle: a taunt from Swordsmen can draw enemy archers out of position, letting your melee troops engage more effectively. Those tighter tactical requirements become especially important on the harder stages.
Progression, timers and monetization
As a free-to-play title, the game uses timers, multiple currencies and resource gates. However, you can expect roughly three hours of uninterrupted play before these systems begin to curtail progress — enough time to decide whether the game’s core loop appeals to you and whether you want to spend money.

Final thoughts for strategy fans
Total War Battles: KINGDOM isn’t as deep as the desktop Total War games, but it adapts many of the series’ core principles into a compact mobile format. If you appreciate methodical, historically flavored strategy and don’t mind some free-to-play constraints, it’s worth trying.
