Terra Nil — an ecological strategy title
Terra Nil is a free strategy game about restoring damaged ecosystems rather than constructing sprawling cities. Created by vfqd, elyaradine, and TheJunt, it flips conventional city-builders on their head: instead of placing houses and factories, you revive a dead landscape by introducing plants, wildlife, and the infrastructure needed to let nature take over again.
Core gameplay and objectives
Rather than harvesting resources to expand a city, your goal is to repair the environment and bring back natural wealth. Each level gives you a procedurally generated plot of devastated ground—typically a flat plateau at the start—and you must decide where to deploy machines and systems to jump-start regrowth.
Key gameplay points:
- Difficulty settings change construction costs, so pick wisely.
- You earn money by turning barren tiles into living, vegetated areas with the available toolset.
- Levels require you to reach a target percentage of greenery to succeed.
Tools, placement and terrain
You work with six deployable devices that interact to cleanse and rewild the map. The three primary, named structures are:
- Greenhouses that seed and accelerate plant growth while generating income.
- Turbines that supply power for some machines.
- Toxic scrubbers that detoxify poisoned ground and allow life to return.
The remaining three tools unlock additional turbine placement options and expand where you can power infrastructure.
Terrain types affect where you can build. The map initially contains just three tile varieties (listed here in a different order):
- Rocks — the only tiles where turbines can be directly placed.
- Dry riverbeds.
- Poisoned soil.
Because rocks are scarce, part of the strategy is to use the unlock tools to create more valid turbine sites so you can power a larger portion of the map.
Maps, progression and variety
Beyond the basic river valley that serves as the first level, you can unlock other biomes, each with its own restoration targets and species:
- A flooded, post-disaster urban zone where tides and ruined infrastructure create unique challenges.
- A volcanic glacier region that blends harsh cold with occasional geothermal advantages.
- A barren island landscape with different constraints and flora.
Later levels introduce higher-tier machines and tougher goals, so planning placement and sequences becomes more important as you progress.
Presentation, atmosphere and shortcomings
Terra Nil delivers a calming atmosphere: soft audio, weather systems that enliven each scene, pixel-art visuals that look vibrant as life returns, and animals that repopulate the restored areas. Controls are generally simple, but the game could be improved by including an explicit tutorial. Currently, some camera controls are only accessible via keyboard and aren’t obvious to new players.
Alternatives and recommendations
If you enjoy lighthearted strategy with a focus on environmental themes, you might also be interested in other casual defense/strategy titles—one commonly suggested companion pick is Plants vs. Zombies (trial editions are often available).
