Quick summary

Terra Nil is an ecological strategy title in which your objective is to rehabilitate devastated landscapes and return them to thriving ecosystems. Created by vfqd, elyaradine, and TheJunt, the game flips traditional city-building goals: instead of constructing urban infrastructure, you seed life back into barren terrain using plants, animals, and a handful of restoration machines.

How the game plays

Rather than gathering resources to expand a city, you work to regrow the environment. Each level gives you a procedurally generated plot that starts nearly lifeless. You’ll place machines and facilities in strategic locations to clean soil, generate power, and plant vegetation until the map meets the required greening percentage to complete the stage. Difficulty settings change construction costs, so planning and efficiency matter.

Key mechanics and tools

  • Greenhouses and planting systems are used to introduce flora and increase your income by creating more habitable ground.
  • Turbines supply electricity for your devices but can only be sited in specific spots at first.
  • Toxic scrubbers remove contamination and make tiles suitable for life again.
  • A trio of unlocking tools expands where you can place turbines and other structures, allowing you to convert restricted tile types over time.

You earn currency by expanding greenery with these six tools, then reinvest it to unlock more placement options and higher-tier machines.

Tile types and placement strategy

  • Rocks are the initial usable sites for turbines and are limited in number, so you must plan turbine placement carefully.
  • Poisoned soil needs cleansing before it can sustain plants and wildlife.
  • Dry riverbeds require restoration to bring water back into the landscape.

By converting and connecting these tile types strategically, you create a positive feedback loop of income and restoration that lets you reclaim the whole map.

Regions and objectives

Different maps introduce new challenges, flora, and fauna as well as specific goals to meet:

  • A flooded, ruined city that demands water management and urban-style restoration.
  • A volcanic glacier with extreme conditions and unique restoration priorities.
  • A barren island that starts almost entirely devoid of life and needs large-scale revegetation.

Each area presents its own set of machines, targets, and visual lifeforms to observe as you restore balance.

Visuals, sound, and atmosphere

Terra Nil combines calming audio with stylized pixel art. Weather effects and animal activity help make each restored environment feel alive, and the controls are intentionally simple to support a relaxing pace.

What could be improved

The most notable drawback is the lack of an in-game tutorial. Some camera and keyboard controls aren’t explained, and there’s no mouse-only alternative for certain view adjustments, which can confuse new players.

Other games to consider

  • Alien Swarm Free — a recommended alternative if you’re looking for a different cooperative or tactical experience.
