What Teleparty does

Teleparty is a free browser extension that lets people watch the same video at the same time from different locations. It synchronizes playback for up to 50 participants, adds a group chat panel, and runs on desktop operating systems (including Windows 11 and macOS). The extension started life as Netflix Party before being rebranded as Teleparty.

Browser compatibility and required items

• An account on the streaming service you plan to watch (if the title requires login).
• A Chromium-compatible browser to run the extension.

Teleparty connects with a variety of services; commonly used ones include Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and Disney+.

Do viewers need individual streaming accounts?

The Teleparty extension itself does not force a Netflix login, but any viewer must be signed into the streaming service that hosts the content you want to watch. For example, if the group chooses a Netflix title, every participant needs access to Netflix. The same requirement applies when watching shows or movies on Disney+, HBO, Hulu, or other subscription platforms.

How to install Teleparty

1. Install the Teleparty extension from the Chrome Web Store or the extension store for your Chromium browser.
2. After installation, the Teleparty icon (TP) appears near the address bar. Pin it for quick access by opening the browser’s extensions menu (the puzzle-piece icon) and clicking the pin next to Teleparty.

Creating and running a watch party

• Choose the specific movie, episode, or documentary you want everyone to watch and set the playback position before starting; the session is tied to that exact title and time marker.
• Click the Teleparty (TP) icon in your browser and select “Start the party.” You can decide whether only the host can control playback by enabling “Only I have control.”
• Copy the generated party URL and send it to your guests. When invited people open the link, they should click the TP icon in their browser to join.
• The chat panel can be shown or hidden; you can also disable it when creating the link if you prefer no chat.
• Note: party links are specific to the chosen title and timestamp. If someone disconnects, or you want to watch a different episode, you will need to create and share a new link. The chat area displays simple status messages about member actions (join/leave, etc.).

Device support and limitations

Teleparty is designed for desktop use and installs on Windows and macOS computers and laptops. It is not available for gaming consoles, smartphones, tablets, or smart TVs.

Best use scenarios

Teleparty is well suited for long-distance friends, family watch nights, and virtual date nights where synchronized viewing and chat enhance the experience. Profiles allow each participant to set a display name and avatar so people are easy to tell apart during a party.
