Product summary
Swapper & Tools is a small utility from DevLab Technologies that helps you free up usable memory on Android devices by creating and managing swap files. Instead of modifying partitions on your SD card, the app enables you to treat a portion of storage as virtual RAM so you can run apps that otherwise need more memory. It’s lightweight and available at no charge.
What the swap mechanism does
Virtual swap lets part of your storage act like extra RAM. When your system needs more working memory, it can move less-used data into the swap file so active apps have more RAM available. This doesn't physically increase the phone’s hardware RAM, but it can improve the device’s ability to run memory-hungry processes.
- You can point the app to a directory (for example, on an SD card) to host the swap file.
- Swappiness controls how aggressively the system uses swap (default 60; highest 100).
- The app can enable the swap automatically each time the device boots.
- Swapper & Tools does not create or require a dedicated swap partition on the SD card.
Installing and configuring
To create a swap file with Swapper & Tools, choose where the swap file should live and set a swappiness value to tune behavior. If you want the swap to be active after every restart, enable the boot activation option. Changing the size of an existing swap requires you to reconfigure the swap file through the app.
- Pick the swap location and configure file size.
- Adjust swappiness to balance performance and swap usage.
- Enable “start on boot” if you want the swap applied automatically.
Note: this app requires a rooted device and a kernel that supports swap. Without root and kernel support, the functionality will not work.
New functionality and adjustable options
Recent updates added more controls and utilities so you can fine-tune how the app behaves:
- A Task Manager to terminate background processes and free memory when needed.
- Expanded Settings to choose file size, destination, and swappiness.
- The option to activate the swap file automatically during boot.
These additions make it easier to customize swap behavior and reclaim memory on demand.
Advantages and caveats
Why use a swap file? Physical RAM is faster and has a bigger impact on responsiveness than storage, and you can't simply replace the phone’s RAM like you can insert a new SD card. Swapper & Tools provides a practical workaround to increase available working memory without hardware changes.
At the same time, be aware of limitations:
- Swap on storage is slower than real RAM, so performance won’t match a hardware upgrade.
- Frequent writes to an SD card can shorten its lifespan.
- Root access and kernel support for swap are mandatory prerequisites.
If you understand those trade-offs, Swapper & Tools can be a useful, free option to get more usable memory for installing or running apps.
