SW Maps — mobile GIS tool overview

SW Maps is a free mobile GIS application for smartphones and tablets that lets you gather, view, and distribute geographic data in the field. It supports GNSS workflows, on-device viewing of vector files, and simple field data collection — useful for surveys, mapping projects, and location-based inventories.

Primary capabilities

• Export collected datasets in common exchange formats such as GeoPackage, KMZ, shapefile, or as spreadsheets/CSV for use in desktop GIS or spreadsheets.
• Connect external RTK-capable GNSS receivers over Bluetooth Low Energy to run high-precision positioning and survey tasks.
• Capture spatial features and related media: record points, polylines, polygons, and attach photos plus custom attribute fields to each feature.
• Sketch new features directly on the map and perform quick measurements for distances and areas while working offline or in the field.

Coordinate system and data handling

All coordinates are stored using the WGS84 geographic datum by default, ensuring broad compatibility with most mapping and GIS tools. Data collected with the app can be packaged and shared to collaborators or imported into other systems for further analysis.
