From Screen to Controller
Eleven, Dustin, Lucas, Mike and the rest of the Hawkins crew return in a new chapter of supernatural misadventure. Stranger Things Season 3 is now streaming, and BonusXP, Inc. has launched the official companion game, Stranger Things 3: The Game. It adapts the season’s storyline into an action RPG that lets you play through key moments, take on fresh side-quests, and tackle threats from the Upside Down.
A Pixelated Tour of Hawkins
The game faithfully recreates many of the show’s memorable locations and pop-culture nods, using a retro 16-bit art direction that leans heavily into ’80s nostalgia. Gameplay proceeds via mission-based progression: you accept objectives, solve brief puzzles, hunt hidden items, and occasionally face off in boss battles against otherworldly foes. The structure is linear enough to follow the season beats while offering optional detours for collectors and explorers.
Playable Characters and Progression
You start the adventure controlling Mike and Lucas, switching between them to overcome environmental obstacles and enemy encounters. As you progress, more characters become available—each brings a different combat approach and unique skill set. Characters can also be equipped and upgraded with gear found around Hawkins to boost their effectiveness.
Playable roster highlights (unlocked during play):
- Hopper — a heavy-hitting, tank-style fighter with crowd-control tools.
- Eleven — a ranged, psychic-focused attacker capable of area disruption.
- Dustin — a support-oriented character with gadgets and utility moves.
- Nancy — a balanced fighter with investigative perks and steady damage.
- Steve — agile and fast, good for hit-and-run tactics.
- Jonathan — a precise, long-range combatant who excels at single-target damage.
- Erica — a nimble, tricky character who shines in exploration and item-finding.
- Billy — a powerful and aggressive combatant with very high damage output.
- Will — a sturdier, defensive-oriented teammate with situational buffs.
- Robin — technical and clever, useful for puzzle solutions and ranged attacks.
(Names and roles above summarize typical playstyles—individual abilities differentiate each character further in-game.)
Co-op, Solo Play, and High-Stakes Modes
Cooperative play is a major draw: two players can team up locally to explore Hawkins together, combining abilities for powerful synergy and coordinated strategies. If you prefer to go it alone, the single-player campaign lets you issue buddy commands to your AI partner so you can still execute combos and coordinate movement.
After finishing the main campaign, an optional “Eliminator” mode is unlocked. In this mode the entire cast is available from the start, but death is permanent—fallen characters stay out of the campaign for the remainder of the run, raising the stakes for every encounter.
Who Will Enjoy It?
Stranger Things 3: The Game is primarily aimed at fans who want more time with the Season 3 storyline in an interactive format. While some players may view it as a faithful retelling rather than a radically different experience, the game provides extra missions, collectible hunts, and cooperative moments that expand on the series’ atmosphere and let you spend more time roaming a stylized Hawkins.
