Quick summary
Stoneshard is a tactical roguelike RPG for PC from Ink Stains Games, set in a gritty medieval world. The game emphasizes turn-based combat, survival systems, and open-world exploration as you take on the role of a wandering mercenary trying to survive in a land scarred by war. A playable demo is available if you want a hands-on preview.
World and progression
You begin as a lone hireling trying to carve out an existence in the besieged realm of Aldor. Accept contracts, earn coin, and watch the fallout of ongoing conflicts as villages and towns bear the consequences of war. Early in the campaign you control a modest caravan that can be upgraded over time; hiring companions adds useful skills and manpower to your group.
Rather than fixed classes, the game lets you freely craft a character build: there are hundreds of abilities to learn and a large pool of equipment to find. Exploration yields rewards and risks alike — delve into endlessly generated dungeons in search of treasure, face lethal creatures, and gather items you can sell or trade.
Key systems and features
- Deep character freedom: no rigid class structure; mix and match from 200+ skills and 400+ pieces of equipment.
- Randomized dungeons full of hazards and rare loot to discover.
- Tactical, turn-based battles where positioning and planning matter against factions, cultists, and brigands.
- Expandable caravan and the ability to recruit followers whose expertise enhances your survival chances.
- Survival mechanics that force you to treat wounds, brew restorative concoctions, and manage your companions’ morale.
- A demo build is available so newcomers can sample core gameplay before committing.
- Currently in Early Access: features are still being added and refined.
Combat and survival
Encounters require tactical thinking rather than button-mashing. You’ll need to balance offensive and defensive choices, use terrain and skills effectively, and adjust your strategy based on the foes you face. Outside of combat, resource management — treating injuries, preparing medicines, and keeping morale up — is essential to staying alive during long campaigns.
Status and recommendation
Stoneshard remains in Early Access, so the experience is expanding and some systems are still under development. Even so, it offers a challenging and atmospheric survival-RPG loop with meaningful choices and substantial customization. If you enjoy methodical combat, harsh survival mechanics, and open-ended character builds, the demo is a good way to decide whether the full game is for you.
