Product overview
Stellar Data Recovery for Windows is a user-friendly tool for retrieving lost or deleted files from your PC and attached storage. It supports a wide range of content — for example, documents, audio recordings, video clips, and image files — and works with internal drives as well as USB sticks and other external media. A free trial lets you scan and preview recoverable items; for specialized repair needs you can also use Stellar's standalone utilities (for example, video or PDF repair tools).
Scanning choices and how they work
When you launch the program, you choose how thoroughly it searches for recoverable data. Common workflows include:
- Deep scan: inspects every sector on a drive using file signatures, then outputs results in a navigable tree so you can review everything it found. This is the most thorough option and usually recovers files missed by quicker scans.
- Targeted scan: limit the search to a specific file type to speed up recovery when you know what you’re after.
- Quick scan: scans the file system structures to rapidly locate recently deleted items.
Deep scans can take considerably longer — sometimes hours depending on drive size and condition — but they’re often the best first step unless you need a single known file quickly.
System performance and practical tips
Running a recovery scan can consume system resources, especially if you scan the drive that contains your operating system. To minimize disruption:
- Avoid running other high-demand applications during a deep scan.
- Use the preview feature to verify files before saving them; this can slow browsing through results but helps identify unnamed or confusing files.
- Employ the search field to jump straight to files whose names you remember.
In our experience, scans on the OS drive did not produce a severe slowdown, but resource use will vary by system.
What the software can recover
Stellar Data Recovery is designed to handle a variety of data-loss situations and formats, including:
- Recycle Bin contents and deleted files from normal use
- Fragmented or partially corrupted media (for example, some MOV and MP4 files)
- Mailbox data such as PST files from Outlook and other email stores
You can scan internal disks and external storage devices alike, and the interface presents findings in a familiar folder-tree layout so you can preview and select individual files for restoration.
File systems supported and monitoring tools
The program supports the common Windows file systems — NTFS, FAT32, and ExFAT — and can also help with recovering mailbox data from Outlook, Outlook Express, or Exchange Server stores. It includes an optional Drive Monitor utility to track drive health indicators like temperature and overall SMART status.
Editions and feature differences
Stellar sells multiple license levels depending on what you need; the trial will show recoverable files, but saving them requires a paid plan. Feature highlights by tier include:
- Premium: adds media-repair capabilities geared toward photos and videos, useful if you routinely recover damaged visual files.
- Standard: covers basic file recovery for documents, media, and email data.
- Professional: includes partition-recovery tools and options for rescuing data from crashed systems.
Choose the edition that matches the types of files you need to restore and any additional repair or system-recovery features you require.
Getting started and recommended workflow
To recover data quickly, run the free demo to scan your drive and preview recoverable items. If you locate the files you need, upgrade to a paid plan to save them to a safe location. As a best practice, stop using the affected drive as soon as you notice data loss and perform a targeted or deep scan from another safe machine or external boot media when possible.
