Quick snapshot
SteamWorld Dig is a 2D digging-platformer set beneath the dusty frontier town of Tumbleton. You play as Rusty, a lone prospector who digs downward to uncover ore, relics, and secrets in a mine that reshapes itself every run. The experience blends vertical platforming with careful resource stewardship and exploration.
Core gameplay loop
- Tunnel through rock to gather minerals and valuables, then return to the surface to convert them into upgrades.
- Balance survival needs like health and light: your lamp consumes coal, and staying too long in the dark is risky.
- Use tools and environmental traversal to access new areas; the map and layout are procedurally mixed each session.
- Manage a limited special-ability meter (water-based powers) that augments movement and combat for short bursts.
Progression and gear
- Improve your gear at the town shop — stronger pickaxes and other equipment let you break tougher materials.
- Unlock permanent abilities that expand how and where you dig, opening previously unreachable regions.
- Construct or remove supports and ladders to change the mine’s topology and make further exploration possible.
- Convert mined resources into upgrades and essentials that make deeper dives practical.
Threats below ground
The mines contain hostile creatures and environmental dangers that complicate expeditions.
- Enemies have distinct attack styles and behaviors, so combat often requires learning patterns rather than just brute force.
- Falling, suffocation in dark caverns, and unstable chasms are hazards you'll need to anticipate and avoid.
- Occasional special encounters or tougher foes guard high-value areas and test your upgraded gear.
Shops, setbacks, and recovery
Shops in town sell items like ladders and supplies that can change how you approach the mine. When you die, you suffer a setback (typically a loss or penalty), but you can attempt to retake what you dropped by returning to the site of your demise. This risk–reward cycle encourages careful planning while still letting you recover from mistakes.
