Overview

StarDict is a free, cross-platform dictionary program released under an open-source license. It supports a very large collection of dictionary files and includes advanced lookup tools that make searching fast and flexible. The application can import lexicons from multiple sources and is compatible with a wide variety of language dictionaries.

Core capabilities

  • Glob-style pattern matching for flexible, wildcard-based searches.
  • Instant lookup from selected text (selection scanning) for quick definitions.
  • Ability to attach and manage lexicons in many different languages.
  • Built-in search functions that let you explore entries without leaving the app.
  • Support for over a thousand dictionary files contributed by the community.

Dictionary sources and compatibility

Many community-maintained dictionaries can be converted into the app’s format, including collections from the FreeDict project. Those converted sets include some historical Webster variants as well as dictionaries covering numerous other languages and dialects. Because the format is open, dictionaries produced by different projects are easy to add, share, and update.

Alternatives worth considering

  • FreeDict (collections and converted datasets available for offline use)
  • Dictionary Pro (paid option with a polished interface and extras)
  • Fora (lightweight lookup tool for quick reference)
